Opting-in Offline Subscribers

FlutterMail requires all users to send email only to people who have opted in to receiving correspondence from them. This is an important requirement because it reduces bounce and abuse rates, keeps our servers off black lists, and ensures great deliverability for all of our clients. To read a description of what constitutes an “opt-in” list and see examples of these types of lists, please read our What is an opt-in list article on the knowledge base.

How do I opt-in subscribers I collected offline?

Many people collect email addresses via written forms, business cards, contests, and many other physical means. Unfortunately, you cannot simply import these addresses into FlutterMail and begin sending campaigns right away. What you can do is email each subscriber individually immediately after they give you their email address.

This initial email must be a personal, individual email from you. It must be sent using your own email client (NOT a mass mailing application like FlutterMail). This email will usually thank the client for their interest and offer more information about the company, product, or service.

In order for the client to be considered opted in one of two things must happen. If you had a personal meeting and feel comfortable doing so, you can ask if they would be interested in receiving email newsletters from you in the future. If they say yes, you can add them as a new subscriber on your email marketing list in FlutterMail. However, the best approach is usually to add a link in the initial email to your online subscription form, or at the very least a link to your website where the online subscription form is hosted.

Adding incentive to join your newsletter (like a discount code or entry into a contest) can sometimes improve your subscription rates.

It’s important to send individual emails to these contacts as soon as possible after receiving their contact information to ensure they’re familiar with your business or organization and remember you. The longer you wait, to poorer your retention level will be.
